One of Saint Paul’s booming areas lies at the edge of the downtown neighborhood in an area known as Lowertown. Lowertown, which is named a historic place on the National Register and the former location of Minnesota’s largest manufacturing and distribution district, has transformed into a rich arts and culture community.
The historic Lowertown neighborhood of Saint Paul was originally established as the gateway for Mississippi riverboat traffic in the 1800s and later the center of rail commerce for the entire Northwest. Today, Lowertown is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, home to a vibrant arts community, nationally recognized farmer’s market, multitude of award-winning bars and restaurants, newly renovated Union Depot, and Mears Park – one of the most active meeting places of the city.
Restaurants and bars such as Handsome Hog, Barrio, Bulldog, PUBLIC Kitchen + Bar, Faces Mears Park and others bring a lively crowd and enrich the historic area. Lovely Mears Park brings sheer beauty to the area with its colorful gardens and clear creek. The popular Saint Paul Farmer’s market brings spirit and fresh produce every weekend during the spring, summer and fall months. Lowertown is an area on the upswing and a prime spot for a night on the town.
Named to the list of the 12 Great Neighborhoods in the Twin Cities, Lowertown is a popular place to live and is commonly known as an artist hub. Each year the area plays host to the popular Saint Paul Art Crawl that tons thousands in attendance throughout the weekend.
