Golden Valley, MN is a first-tier western Minneapolis suburb that offers you big-city convenience with a small-town feel.

Situated five miles west of downtown, Golden Valley is about as close as a suburb can get to Minneapolis.

To give you an idea of demographics, Its population is just above 20,000, half of households have married couples and about a third have school-age children.

In fact, the local school district merged with that of neighboring Hopkins more than three decades ago. Today, the city's children attend either Hopkins or Robbinsdale schools.

More than 25% of households are headed by retirees, and another 39% are composed of individuals over the age of 55. But if you have children, there are still numerous golf courses, country clubs, parks and lakes where kids of all ages play.

In terms of the housing market, the median sales price in Golden Valley MN real estate today is about $280,000. You’ll find that inventory is largely made up of single-family homes (about 71%) while the rest is composed of multi-family homes, condos and apartments in a wide range of styles.

Although there are new constructions the majority of the housing stock dates back to the post-war period (50s and 60s). The city takes pride in maintaining its stock and encourages residents to regularly upgrade their homes through repairs and renovation.

Like many suburbs of Minneapolis-St.Paul, Golden Valley’s early 20th century history was primarily centered around agriculture.

Today, it’s home to numerous employers like General Mills (which employs 5,500) as well as Allianz Life, OptumHealth, Honeywell and more.

Even so, the city retains its rural feel, and deer regularly wander into residential yards.

Even if you work outside the city, your average commute time will only about 20 minutes via I394 and State Highways 100 and 55.
